Hawaii - Lake Tahoe Connection

"Alakai," the Hawaii Superferry for interisland transportation, has had more than a few set backs. Surfers on their boards blocking the entrance to Kauai's harbor and the lack of a proper envirnonmental impact study are just two roadblocks to the ferry's success as an alternative to air travel. Currently, the mega catamaran-style ferry only operates between Honolulu, Oahu and Kahului, Maui. Promo fares of $39 per passenger; $55 per passenger vehicle have been extended for travel through June 5, 2008. The catch? Reservations must be booked by March 31st. Other problems include the fuel surcharge (now at 35.3%) and the fact that the ferry is dry-docked until April 22nd, for repairs. On a positive note: the option of future ferry travel between Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island could be a great alternative for families to enjoy a more leisurely way to "island hop."
